DVIDS - GeorgiaDAYTON, Ohio — As the Department of the Air Force works to accelerate digital modernization across its acquisition enterprise, the Digital Transformation Office, located at Headquarters, Air Force Materiel Command, hosted an executive Digital Transformation Masterclass Oct. 26–30, bringing senior leaders together to explore how leadership, organizational culture and modern digital practices can reshape the way the service delivers capabilities.
The intensive five-day experience focused on equipping decisionmakers with the tools and perspectives needed to navigate large-scale organizational change, eliminate barriers to progress and accelerate the adoption of digital practices across major programs.
"Digital transformation is fundamentally a leadership and culture challenge, not just a technical one," said Craig Spraggins, Digital Transformation Office director. "This Masterclass provides our senior leaders with the shared vision, cultural frameworks, and cross-center alignment necessary to drive rapid, lasting change across the acquisition lifecycle."
While technology is a critical component of modernization, successfully transforming an enterprise requires more than implementing new tools and systems. It demands a shift in how organizations think, operate, make decisions and empower their people.
Throughout the week, participants explored the operational and human dimensions of digital adoption, with discussions centered on overcoming bureaucratic barriers, building trust in super intelligence and advanced automation, leveraging data to improve acquisition oversight, and adopting more agile approaches to governance and program management.
The curriculum emphasized four interconnected areas: cultivating a digital-first culture and institutional agility; responsibly integrating emerging technologies to improve decision-making; transitioning from intuition-based decisions to data-driven execution; and embracing iterative processes that support rapid software delivery and continuous improvement.
For the Air Force Materiel Command, these efforts are particularly important as the command works to align established acquisition processes with the speed, flexibility and innovation required in an increasingly complex technological environment.
The emphasis on leadership alignment and organizational culture also reinforces the importance of creating an environment where teams can challenge traditional approaches, reduce unnecessary friction and implement solutions more effectively.
Rather than treating digital transformation as an isolated technology initiative, the Masterclass challenged leaders to consider how decisions, organizational structures and workplace behaviors influence the success of modernization efforts.
As the Air Force continues its push toward a more agile, data-driven and digitally enabled acquisition environment, the Digital Transformation Office is helping ensure leaders have the mindset, knowledge, and organizational alignment necessary to turn modernization goals into lasting results.
The message is clear: Digital transformation isn't simply about changing the technology the Air Force uses. It's about changing how the institution thinks, leads and delivers for the warfighter.
